Being accepted and recognized as an ABOTA member is based on civil jury trial experience and on a system where lawyers accumulate points related to this civil jury trial experience.
Minimum requirements for lawyers applying to be an ABOTA member are that lawyers must be able to list at least twenty civil jury trials to jury verdict, where they were the lead counsel, or a lawyer can also apply for ABOTA membership if he or she has a minimum of ten civil jury trials to jury verdict, where he or she was the lead counsel, as long as enough points have been accumulated during these ten trials - this is possible because more points are awarded for trials that last longer than one and a half weeks.
