A Martindale-Hubbell peer review rated AV rating is the highest ranking for legal ability and professional ethics.
An AV rating is higher than a BV rating or a CV rating, and is significant and exceptional. Lawyers consider the Martindale-Hubbell AV rating very important when looking for other lawyers to refer their clients to.
How does a lawyer receive a Martindale-Hubbell rating?
Lawyers who are members of the Bar and Judiciary give their confidential opinions of other lawyers' abilities and ethics.
This rating system is part of an old tradition and is done only at Martindale-Hubbell.
A lawyer cannot simply ask for a Martindale-Hubbell rating, as it first has to be determined that the lawyer meets the criteria of a general standards rating (The "V" of AV or BV or CV). Once this has been determined, fellow lawyers confidentially decide whether that rating should be A, B, or C.
